Ability to Narrow Search -- Click below to narrow your search
Maybe there is a way to do this now and I am not aware of it.

Example 1

Example 2

This solution is very common today in most site... (Ebay, Amazon, ETC)
Can this functionality be built in to future version?

I am currently using BV Commerce 5 SP3.2

Ability to narrow search:

These look like categories and sub cats to me. We do that now, it shouldn't be a great deal of work to format cats and subs this way - all exposed in grid format. Not ootb

Ability to show products in this 'list' type display:

This will take a little work, but can also be done. Not ootb. NOTE that the "Buy Now" button takes you to the product page so you can select the finish, so a "Details" button would be more appropriate. And BOY, the price change when selecting a finish option is INSTANT.

This is called faceted search (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faceted_browser). Here is a list of possible vendors that will add it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Enterprise_Search_Vendors. Expect to pay $1K-$50K for a commercial product before integration. At the high end, there will be advanced features such as behavior analysis and search prediction.

We have successfully implemented a "guided" search as you describe in your posts. Check out any category on ibuyofficesupply.com (direct link to a category).

We allow the navigation to filter by Manufacturer, Price, Category as well as the different product type properties of the products.

If you would like more information or would like this feature implemented into your website, please contact us at 800-808-2660

Alex - Very nice implementation. It is super easy to use. But I wonder if "[x]" is the equivalent of technical jargon. I know what it means without thinking, but I wonder if Bob the new secretary does. I think I would have used a word like "Remove".

Alex,
Very cool! We're working on something similar at the moment. Are you caching or pre-calculating the number of products available for each filter? Did you run into any performance problems that you needed to overcome while developing this? Why did you opt to only allow the user to select one value for a given filter? Thanks!

Andy - Thank you for the suggestion. I will see to it that it is implemented in some fashion.

Aaron - With a catalog of over 45,000+ active products and over 400 categories, performance did become an issue, but as you can see, with some work, we were able to overcome it. The reason for not allowing a multi-select type option is simply due to the style of navigation this is. It is a drill down or filter search. We have a "power-search" multi-select search function built into another website that would allow you to pick many criteria at once, including multiple of the same attribute. Also, the customer wanted it this way!

David, Andy, and Alex,
We completed our faceted search system. It's an AJAX implementation that allows for multi-selection of filters. You can check out the details at the link below.
